Over The Horizon Map google maps engine - custom development

BLENDING MULTIPLE
TECHNOLOGIES INTO A
SINGLE VISION

//Local Consumption - Global Impact

The Problem

The Wildlife Conservation Society wanted a fast way of distributing 250 global 1x1km resolution rasters. Each raster describes how each country of our world influences each other. Then is also possible to see how areas of specific scientific interest are affected. Areas such as the world's Tiger Conservation Landscapes.

Additionally, they wanted a method to allow users to define their own areas of interest and be delivered the relevant, non-precalcualted statistics back at web (not analysis) speed!

Our Solution

For this tall order we pushed all the rasters into Google Maps Engine. This allowed us to easily display them on a Google Map. Additionally, country spatial data was managed inside PostGIS, allowing us to provide the user with what is effectively real time image analysis in GDAL.

The Wildlife Conservation Society, founded in 1895, has the clear mission to save wildlife and wild places across the globe. Today, they protect many of the world’s iconic creatures across the world, including gorillas in the Congo, tigers in India, wolverines in the Yellowstone Rockies, and ocean giants in our world’s amazing seascapes.

Kim Fisher

Spatial Analyst and Developer at Wildlife Conservation Society

"Sparkgeo is the most responsive group of spatial developers I've worked with. They would have been happy to deliver a single, turnkey product with relatively few requirements from me, but our complex application required a lot of collaborative problem-solving, and with Sparkgeo, every problem had an innovative solution. Whenever necessary, they created scripts and tools to tie together a set of cutting-edge, sometimes-finicky components, all in close consultation with me and with an eye on the big picture. And they'd make it seem easy. "

//Technology Highlights

Google Maps

Certified Google Maps Developer

With certified Google Maps & Google Earth developers, Sparkgeo leads in custom Google Maps development. We are listed on the Google Earth Outreach list for our work with the non-profit community.

Citizen Science

Citizen Science

Budding scientists can use the "Define your own area" tool to understand a county's (or the Globe's) influence on their area of interest. And see the results instantly.

PostGIS

PostGIS logo

PostGIS is our favourite spatial datastore! It is a spatial database extender for PostgreSQL object-relational database. It adds support for geographic objects allowing location queries to be run in SQL.

Google Maps Engine

Google Maps Engine logo

Having Applied a colour table in Earth Engine, we stored 250 large (1x1 Km Global) rasters in Google Maps Engine and pull them into a Google Map interactively. Oh, and it's really FAST!

Extendable for WCS

Extendable pic

We built this site to act on its own or as part of other sites (as an iFrame). In this way WCS got maximum value for our work. Each Area of interest can be accessed by a separate URL

Real Time Image Analysis

GDAL logo

GDAL is still the premier image analysis toolkit, allowing the user to interact with geospatial image programmatically. We used it here to allow near real-time image analysis.
